High School Students Attend Local Art Show

Felix Harrington, 1st place winner of the Kaw Valley Bank Art Show.

Kaw Valley Bank hosted an art show for high school seniors on Friday, November 3rd. Three students from each high school in the Topeka area were invited and awards were given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place based on the participant's art entries. Shawnee Heights High School selected Felix Harrington, Macey Spaulding, and Elaena Steffen to attend the show.

Felix Harrington was awarded 1st place at the art show and received a $1500 scholarship. His pieces represent the unseen, such as mental illness and emotion. This year he has been working on sculptures that represent relationships and personal growth. He likes to combine that concept with metaphorical creatures in nature. After graduating, he is likely to attend Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, OR.

Paintings were entered by Macey Spaulding who said she has always had an interest in art. Her favorite medium by far is painting and this year she has been focusing on Cynical Realism, a style of art first practiced in Beijing. She describes this style as mocking situations in order to question what is actually happening. Next year, she plans on going to Kansas University to become an ESL teacher and wants to teach both in the United States and abroad.

Elaena Steffen loves working with metal and decided to submit some of her jewelry pieces. She has been doing jewelry for three years and enjoys working in 3-dimensional mediums. While Elaena is still deciding which direction she would like to take after high school, she shows interest in engineering, product design, and graphic design.
